Seeking the Unsearchable God - Part 1

“O, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God!  How inscrutable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!  For who knew the mind of the Lord? Or, who became His adviser? Or who gives to Him first, and it will be repaid him?  Seeing that out of Him and through Him and for Him is all:  to Him be the glory for the eons!  Amen!”  (Romans 11:33-36 CLNT)

The depth of the riches, wisdom, and knowledge of God is deeper than humanly fathomable!

There may be people who claim to know all the secrets of God and claim to have God and His ways all figured out.  The reality is that they do not.  They cannot.  Discovering the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God is a life long journey.  It is not a destination we arrive at while we live on this earth.

“But as for me, I would seek God, and I would place my cause before God; Who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.”  (Job 5:8-9 NAS)

Every day, I observe God orchestrate many things which I consider unsearchable—beyond my imagination or comprehension.  I observe God working and moving in ways that seem utterly untraceable to me.  The older I get, the more I am aware of how little I know and understand.

“Can you discover the depths of God?  Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?  They are high as the heavens, what can you do?  Deeper than Sheol (the unseen), what can you know?  Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.”  (Job 11:7-8)

To say that the measure of the depths of God is longer than the earth and broader than the sea is an understatement.  Can we discover the depths of God?  It is a very long journey there, and we face many distractions along the way.

Can we discover the limits of Him Who is mighty over all?  I don’t think so.  Does He, YHWH, have any limits?  How can the All-Mighty have limits?  Is there anything the All-Mighty cannot do?  He is the One Who creates all, out of Whom all is.  How can He have limits?  He is the one Who sets limits.

How can we discover His depths?  His depths are limitless.  We know so little—we’ve barely dipped ourselves under the surface of God.  We’re only snorkeling about.  We find ourselves hanging on to the world outside of the ocean depths.  We’re afraid to let go of our dependence on earthly things in order to swim farther and dive deeper.  We’re dependent and secure upon the things we have waiting for us at the shore, even though they are on shifting sand.

I can’t deny that diving deep into the ocean of God may be intimidating or frightening at times.  After all, in His ocean of riches, wisdom, and knowledge, we have no earthly ground to set our feet upon.  God carries us by His waves, as He sees fit.  We get to ride His waves and have Him lead us from discovery to discovery.  However, even though we may have no earthly ground to rely on, we do have a spiritual ground which is more solid than any man made steel on this earth.  That spiritual ground is Christ.

The Lord Christ Jesus takes and leads us through the lifetime journey of discovery.  He is the One chosen to reveal God, YHWH, to us.

“…there is no other God except One.  For even if so be that there are those being termed gods, whether in heaven or on earth…nevertheless…there is one God, the Father, out of Whom all is, and we for Him, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through Whom all is, and we through Him.”  (1 Corinthians 8:4-7)
